What are NAV fees?

NAV CANADA , is a non-share capital, private corporation, that is responsible for air navigation facilities and services across Canada.

To recover the costs of operating air traffic control towers and employing air traffic controllers they levy service charges on aircraft operators.

 These NAV fees are passed on to the consumer and added to the price of an airline ticket.

As per the Law governing its operations, NAV CANADA has to follow a consultation process when it proposes new or revised charges.

Why are flights in Canada so expensive?

Flights in Canada are so expensive because of a number of reasons.

1. Competition. There are only 2 large domestic airlines in Canada which are Air Canada and Westjet. As a result of this basic duopoly there is less price competition.

2. Air Canada provides service all across Canada and some of their routes are not profitable. As a result they charge more in their profitable routes to cover the cost of running unprofitable routes.

3. Taxes and surcharges. There are a number of government taxes and surcharges when you buy an airline ticket in Canada. There is the NAV fee, airport improvement fees, security fees, etc..

4. Canada’s size. Canada is the second largest country in the world and to get around people need to take planes to get to some places. However, it is fiscally impossible for domestic airlines to make a profit on some routes.

Often you can fly to Europe cheaper than you can fly across Canada. This is because there is more competition and their is more demand. International airlines will compete for service from Canada to Europe which drops the price points for airline tickets.

So if you are planning a flight in Canada, its really important to shop around for the best prices because airline tickets are generally expensive.
